Course content

The course code is used to offer teaching on topics relevant for Asia or Middle East Studies or Asia or Middle East related history of religion. It is tied to guest professors, conferences, research groups or similar events that bring us resources in terms of new people for a short period or enable us to include students in current research projects. It will be offered as and when such events take place.

Learning outcome

The course will offer teaching at a level closely related to research projects while also introducing the student properly to the topic. Hence it will offer teaching both on the specific topic at hand and in the broader field within which the topic is situated.
The course will introduce the student properly to the topic but will often presuppose knowledge about the field. The specific content of the course will vary from semester to semester.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Admission to the Master Programme in Asian and African Studies.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course requires good knowledge of English

Teaching

The course consists of approximately 10 to 14 seminars and lectures. The students are to write a term essay (8-10 pages) on a topic chosen in cooperation with the teacher and closely connected to the content of the course. A draft of the essay must be presented to the teacher for preliminary evaluation and collective discussion in class. The course requires active participation.

Examination

Students are to submit a term essay (8-10 normal pages) on a topic chosen in cooperation with the teacher and closely connected to the content of the course. The topic is chosen at the beginning of the term, and a draft of the essay must be presented to the teacher midterm for preliminary evaluation. Submission of the draft is a prerequisite for being allowed to take the exam.

Active participation in the discussions on each other’s draft is mandatory.

The assessment is an integrated part of the course and it is subsequently not possible to sit for the exam unless is registered for the teaching component of the course.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
