Course content
Persian 2110 develops intermediate Persian proficiency and literacy through authentic texts and media. The course builds upon the reading, writing, and speaking skills and cultural awareness developed in Persian 1 and 2. Persian 2110 follows closely the material covered in Persian Learner: Intermediate Persian for College Students, units 21 through 25. It also provides training in grammar analysis through complementary lessons in Basic Persian: A Grammar and Workbook. The course is designed to prepare students for language study in Iran during the subsequent (fourth) term.
Learning outcome
By the end of the semester, successful students will be able to:
- Speak and write in multiple time frames and on a variety of topics of varying complexity
- Speak in a formal manner for an extended period of time (10 minutes) on a familiar but complex topic
- Comprehend authentic materials in Persian in various genres with the assistance of dictionaries and grammar references
- Recognize and utilize multiple registers of Persian as appropriate to particular social contexts

If you wish to take the exam in this course in the fall of 2021, you must contact the department (IKOS) within the deadlines for course registrations for the fall semester 2021.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
You must have passed the exams for Persian 1110 and 1120 to take this course. A good command of English is also required.
Teaching
Three 2-hour seminars are given per week. The primary languages of instruction will be Persian and English. Students will be expected to translate between Persian and English, both in writing and orally, to demonstrate mastery of Persian linguistic structures.
Mandatory Activities
- One written assignment. The assignment must be typed and will be submitted through the course website.
- One formal oral presentation delivered in class. Presentations will be on topics selected by students. More details will be provided in class.
- Attendance: Students must attend at least 70% of lectures
Examination
The written 4-hour exam will be handwritten and must be completed without aids like dictionaries or other translation devices. The exam will require students to read, analyze, contextualize, and translate between Persian and English and to write extended responses, including a minimum 250 word essay, in Persian.
No oral exam.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
