SAN2130 - Sanskrit 3 + 4 Autumn 2017
This course runs over two semesters. The autumn semester (30 credits) is in its entirety a mandatory stay in India, where you will be given instruction in Sanskrit.
During this semester, you will also participate in other activities (such as training in writing on palm leaves, manuscript reading and conservation, Sanskrit drama courses, exchange with Sanskrit students, etc.).

In the subsequent spring semester (10 credits), teaching of classical Sanskrit is continued at the IKOS.
During this semester you are given an introduction to Pali and introductions into relevant literary genres in Sanskrit which were not covered during the mandatory stay in India.
Texts read during this semester may include passages from Kalidasa's Meghaduta, Manu's Dharmashastra, Kaitilya's Arthashastra, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Puranas, and Mahatmya texts.
Learning outcome
Sanskrit 3+4 provides a deeper knowledge of classical Sanskrit, and basic knowledge of Pali.
Moreover, in the third semester in India the students are familiarized with traditional Indian learning and teaching methods.
They will be introduced to locating and reading palm-leaf manuscripts, how to work in Indian libraries, and also receive an introduction into memorizing and reciting (Vedic) Sanskrit texts.
Further, the students are introduced to academic innovation through lectures closely tied to research. This course is required for a Master's degree in Sanskrit.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Both with passing marks. The mandatory stay in India requires a minimum C in the Sanskrit 2 to attend.
Recommended previous knowledge
Good knowledge of English.
Teaching
The fall semester consists of a mandatory stay in India, following a program set up by IKOS. The course requires at least 4 participants to be organized.
On return from India, the students continue to work on their knowledge of classical Sanskrit and independently familiarize themselves with the literature assigned to them.

Examination
Before students can take the examination, they must write a qualifying term paper approved by the course instructor. The term paper (2000-2500 words) is to be handed in during the spring semester by deadlines set out in the detailed teaching plan.

The examination is held in the spring semester, and consists of a written and an oral examination.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
