LING4170 – Linguistics Specialization on Structure and Form

Course content

The academic theme of this course changes from semester to semester, but all specializations provide students with deeper knowledge of the fundamentals of recent? research on linguistic structure and form. This may for example involve various aspects of leading theories in cognitive grammar, construction grammar, generative grammar, and sometimes more or less specialized linguistic research fields (which can be studied under several theoretical approaches), such as argument structure, diachronic linguistics, grammaticalization, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, interactional linguistics, language acquisition, linguistic typology, sociolinguistics or bilingualism.

Learning outcome

As a student of such a specialization course you will be introduced to a general theoretical framework that constitutes a relevant approach to linguistic research as well as to more specialized domains which you will be able to grasp more comprehensively. In addition to providing you with a theoretical foundation for linguistic analysis, the course will help you learn to apply the theoretical concepts to work towards your own thesis.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

The minimum number of attendants for the course is 5.

Teaching

Classes are given throughout the semester, 14 double lectures in total.

Each student has to complete a compulsory assignment given by the teacher during the course of the seminar. The assignment must be approved by the teacher before the student can take the final exam.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The final examination is a term paper

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to?the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of?cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.

If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
