MULTI4195 – Master's Thesis in Multilingualism

Course content
This course consists of the student’s work on the MA thesis in Multilingualism, if the student chooses the course of study that includes a project semester. The topic of the thesis is determined by the student in consultation with the supervisor. The thesis will be a scientific study with a theoretical foundation in the research tradition of multilingualism.
Learning outcome
Through the work on the master's thesis, students gain experience with an independent scientific study, and lay the foundation for further activities in the field of multilingualism. Students learn to formulate a research question, discuss past research, find relevant data, explain theory and methodology, analyze data, argue for an analysis, and present the results. The final grade reflects the degree to which students have achieved the learning outcomes for the course.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
It is expected that you will have completed 2 semesters of coursework and either NOR4900 – Nordisk prosjektsemester (discontinued), NOR4950 – 欧洲杯在线买球_欧洲杯投注网站推荐@sprosjektsemester for lingvistiske og nordiske studier (discontinued), or a semester abroad before you start working on the master’s thesis. It is also possible to complete 3 semesters of coursework before working on the master’s thesis. Admission is restricted to students in the master's programme in Multilingualism.
Teaching
There is no formal teaching related to the subject.Each student is entitled to up to 9 hours of supervision (individual and/ or in group supervision). Joint supervision sessions will be organized when possible, where students will receive peer feedback and supervisor feedback in a workshop setting.
Supervision in connection with writing the master's thesis is obligatory. It is not possible to submit a master's thesis without supervision. The Multilingualism teaching coordinator will facilitate a meeting for students with potential supervisors in the second semester. The student must take the initiative to follow up and confirm a supervisor, first with their desired supervisor and then with the teaching coordinator. In some cases, the first choice of supervisor will not be possible and the teaching coordinator will assign a supervisor. ?
A valid supervision agreement for master's students at the department must be signed, outlining the rights and duties for the supervisor and the student. ?The department appoints the supervisor.
Examination
The master's thesis is submitted in the last semester after the other courses in the degree have been completed. The submission deadlines are June 1 in the spring semester and 15 December in the autumn semester.

The assignment must be up to 50 pages (2,300 characters each without spaces). The assignment must be written in English or any of the Scandinavian Languages. The master's thesis is assessed with letter grades by an internal and an external examiner.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.?
After the grading is complete, students will receive a written justification for the grade of their thesis in the mail.
