NFI4120 – Old Norse - Language and Texts

Course content
Introduction to Old Norse grammar and study of standardized and non-standardized texts.
An introduction to metre is also given, beginning with the Eddaic and skaldic poems in the original language.
Learning outcome
Students should obtain a general knowledge of Old Norse grammar and syntax in order to be capable of independent study of an unseen Old Norse text, whether it be in standardized or non-standardized form.
The course will also give some understanding of metre and poetic language so that the student will come some way in being able to analyse Old Norse poetry.
The students are also to learn how to use Old Norse dictionaries and editions.
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

The minimum number of attendants for the course is 5.
Recommended previous knowledge
This course does not presuppose that the student has any previous knowledge of Old Norse. However, it is expected that the student has some background knowledge of the period.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with MAS4120 – Old Norse - language and texts (discontinued).
- 10 credits overlap with NFI1101 – Norr?n grammatikk og eldre spr?khistorie.
Teaching
Teaching is given in the form of seminars and will amount to 42 hours in total.
Written qualification assignments must be approved by the subject teacher before students can sit for the exam.
The qualification assignment is a folder consisting of 15 shorter philological assignments. Students are given assignments for each class (21 classes), and it is mandatory to submit at least 15 of these. The assignments must be handed in by set deadlines each week and will be discussed in class. At least 12 out of 15 submissions must be approved for the student to be able to sit for the exam.
It is otherwise expected that students are prepared to actively participate in the class.
Examination
The course is rounded off with a 4-hour written examination. The student`s answers are assessed by the subject teacher and an internal moderator.
