NORINT0120 – Norwegian for International Students, Level 2

Course content

This is a course on the intermediate level for international students. The subject builds on skills and knowledge acquired in NORINT0110 or the equivalent.

The classes strongly emphasize the students’ oral activity, both when understanding and speaking are concerned. The students should build on basic grammar and, in addition, acquire knowledge about language variations, idiomatic expressions and logical relations.

They should show that they are able to use this knowledge when writing. Topics and vocabulary are from texts related to Norwegian culture, topics of current interest in Norwegian society, and from their study situation.

This is a proficiency course with a final examination.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course, students should be able to understand oral and written presentations on topics covered in the course. The students should be able to talk about these topics and take the initiative and express their own opinions in conversations.

They should be able to write coherent texts about topics covered in the course, and they should be able to explain and justify opinions tied to these topics.

The final mark will show to what extent the student has attained the intended learning outcome for the subject.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

It is assumed that students have Higher education entrance qualification with the exception of Norwegian language skills, and that they have passed NORINT0110 – Norwegian for International Students, Level 1?or the equivalent with the grade D or better on both the written and oral exam.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

This course has six hours seminar teaching per week for 14 weeks (84 hours in total), and two hours grammar lectures per week for 11 weeks (22 hours in total).

The seminar teaching requires active student participation and students will be given written assignments every week.

The seminar teaching has mandatory attendance. The grammar lectures are not mandatory.

Compulsory activities

In order to sit for the examination, the following compulsory assignments must be approved by the teacher:

  • 75 % attendance in the seminar teaching (63 hours)
  • One compuslory oral presentation

Access to teaching

If you have completed compulsory instruction and have had this approved, you are not entitled to repeat that instruction. If you have been admitted to the course, but have not completed compulsory instruction or had this approved, you are entitled to new instruction permitting available capacity.

Examination

The exam is a 3-hour written examination and an oral exam. The written and oral exam accounts for 50 % of the final grade. Both parts must be passed in the same semester.

In order to sit for the examination, the compulsory activities must be approved.

Approved compulsory activities are valid for the next two terms that the course is offered.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian, and you submit your response in Norwegian.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
