Course content
Knowledge about different genres of factual prose, i.e. non-fiction. Students will write and present different forms of factual texts.
This is a skills course with a final portfolio assessment.
Learning outcome
Students will acquire knowledge about language, text theory and communication strategies relating to factual and specialised texts. They will be able to understand and account for the structure and content of factual texts and be able to write their own texts that comply with appropriate prose criteria.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students must be eligible for matriculation (except the Norwegian language requirement) and must have passed NORINT0130BK or equivalent with the grade D or better on both the oral and written exam. Persons who have attended Norwegian language courses outside the UiO have to take a placement test (at UiO).
Teaching
This is a 30-hour course.
The course is reserved exclusively for students who have been accepted into the course.

Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
During the semester, students will prepare a basic portfolio consisting of at least 4 texts. Their subject teacher will valuate and provide feedback about this portfolio. Students may also be expected to participate in response groups.
Two of the assignments from the basic portfolio and a reflection note will be included in an evaluation portfolio (a total of three texts). These two assignments will be placed in the evaluation portfolio in both their original and revised forms. The teacher will not proide feedback on the reflection note. The evaluation portfolio will be assessed by an examiner after the end of the course and given a mark of passed/not passed.
Before writing an assignment or sitting for an examination, you should learn the rules for correct use of quotations and references.

Language of examination
The examination will be written in Norwegian.
Grading scale
The students' performance will be assessed as "passed" or "not passed".
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who cannot complete scheduled examination because of an unavoidable absence (illness etc.) have the right to apply for a postponement. Postponed examinations are held either later in the same term or early in the following term. Documentation of an unavoidable absence must be enclosed with the application for a postponement, in accordance with Section 5.5. of the Regulations governing studies and examinations at the University of Oslo.
