Course content
The course gives a brief introduction to different methods and types of data used in linguistic research. It also offers insights into the process of writing a linguistic paper in the form of styles, referencing, punctuation and other important aspects of writing.
The students will write a 10-page paper on a chosen topic relating to a 2000-course in English language which they have completed or are currently attending. The topic or research question will be arrived at in consultation with the teacher of the 2000-level course.
A guided session in the University library is an integral part of the course.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- specialized in an area within English language;
- trained your ability to select, limit and question a particular topic;
- learned how to write a structured academic paper;
- learned how to use library resources.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
ENG1100 – English Grammar and ENG1103 – English Phonetics and Intonation
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that you attend this course in your last semester.
Teaching
The teaching is given in the form of weekly two-hour seminars over ten weeks: three sessions in the beginning of the semester, including an obligatory tour of the library; three sessions in the middle of the semester where the students present their literature reviews and learn about aspects of writing; and four sessions at the end of the semester where the students present their work. In addition, students receive individual supervision relating to their chosen topic.
In order to submit the final paper, all students must present and have their work approved in the group presentation sessions. Attendance at a minimum of 8 out of 10 seminars is obligatory. Additional absences must be justified (please contact the exam administrator). Read more about guidelines for compulsory activities.
Examination
The final exam consists of a paper of 10 standard pages (4000 words) that must be submitted within a given deadline.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
