ENG3501 – Thesis course, British Area studies

Course content

The students will write a 10-page essay on a chosen topic. The topic, and problem in question, will be arrived at in consultation with the teacher.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you:

  • have specialised in an area within British history, culture or contemporary society.
  • know how to select, limit and question a particular topic, and exercise your abilities in giving a structured academic presentation.
  • can identify, define, limit, and problematise a relevant topic.
  • know how to develop a structured analysis.
  • can identify and describe scholarly ethics, and can use the appropriate scholarly apparatus to demonstrate this knowledge.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

A good knowledge of the politics, history, culture and society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Teaching

There will be 3 two hours seminars in the first half of the semester, a library-tour, and 1 two hour seminar at the end of the semester, 10 hours in all. Students are entitled to some individual guidance from the teacher during the semester.

Mandatory course-work: In order to submit the final paper, all students must present their work in the group presentations session held at the third seminar. You must attend at least 3 out of 5 seminars. Additional absences must be justified by documentation to the exam coordinator. Read more about guidelines relating to compulsory activities.

Examination

A paper of 4000 words +/- 10% must be submitted within a given deadline. The topic of the essay should be worked out between the individual student and the teacher.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.

If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
