Course content
The aim of this course will be to study grammatical – and to some extent lexical – differences between the two main varieties of present-day English: American and British. Some of the set texts focus on American English and discuss how this variety differs from British English.
Learning outcome
The aim is to gain added insight into especially some of the topics taken up in the set texts. Students will be expected to participate actively in class and to submit papers. Such papers may well be based on examination of some of the available electronic corpora. They may subsequently be expanded in master’s theses.
Admission

Maximum 15 of students will be admitted and a minimum of 3 students required for the course to start.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the language master program, LAP or other relevant master program.
Recommended previous knowledge
A sound knowledge of both spoken and written English is required.
Teaching
There will be two class hours per week for ten weeks, with a break in the teaching at the middle of the semester (two weeks in the spring, one week in the autumn) to allow for independent study and the writing of papers. 80% class attendance is mandatory.
Examination
Final marks are awarded on the basis of a chosen project. The paper should be of a combined length of 10 pages, where one page is defined as 2,300 characters without spaces. Papers must include references and bibliography based on established norms Error: Reference resolver with name '//www.hf.uio.no/sitat/' not found. The paper is also to be presented orally at the seminar.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
For ‘hovedfag’ students taking the course as a 15-credit ‘hovedemne’ there will be an addition to the reading list.
