ENG4193 – Master’s Thesis in Linguistics and its Application for a Multilingual Society
Course content
The thesis is an independent research project on a subject chosen in agreement with your supervisor.
The thesis must be written in English and should be of about 40-60 pages (one standard page is 2300 characters).
The project includes participation in a colloquium involving all LAMUSO students in the same institution, where students present and discuss their thesis topics and preliminary results.
Learning outcome
After completing your thesis you will have:
- learned how to plan and complete a research project.
- learned how to gather and critically systematize a substantial amount of information on your selected topic within linguistics.
- increased knowledge of relevant linguistic theory and research Methods.
- acquired English language skills at an advanced level, including academic writing skills.
- gained experience in presenting and discussing your own work.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Teaching
Individual supervision. Your main supervisor will be from ILOS and the co-supervisor will be from UCL. Students must present their thesis topic with preliminary results in a colloquium as part of their master thesis project. This is an obligatory requirement for the course and must be approved by the supervisors . Read more about guidelines for compulsory activities.

The contract of supervision must be filled out and submitted to your student adviser. Note that having a supervisor is an obligatory part of the Master’s thesis and that the agreement of supervision must be approved before the thesis can be submitted.

Examination
The thesis must be submitted by June 1 in the spring semester, and December 15 in the autumn semester. The obligatory presentation must be approved before the thesis can be submitted.

The thesis will be graded by an exam commission consisting of one internal and one external examiner (usually one from UiO and one from UCL), and will be graded on a descending scale from A to E for a pass and F for a fail.
A written explanation for the grade will be sent to the students when exam results are ready.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The language of examination is English, French or German, depending on the students language focus
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
