Course content
In this course the students will acquire knowledge about various literary movements that were dominant during the first half of the 20th century and which are known collectively as Modernism. The syllabus contains works by some of the best known modernists in Britain. Although special emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of individual texts with regard to themes, structure, imagery etc., it will also be important to establish each author's approach to Modernism.
Learning outcome
To become familiar with Modernism as a period in literary history, to acquire detailed knowledge about individual texts on the syllabus and develop analytical and critical skills in dealing with modernist texts.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students would be well advised to take ENG1303 before this course.
Recommended previous knowledge
A good knowledge of English - both oral and written.
Overlapping courses
This course overlaps with ENG2330 – British Modernism (discontinued).
Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with seminars (2 hours a week).
Examination
Students must turn in an essay (app. 5 standard pages, 11.500 characters) by a stated deadline during the semester.
The essay must be approved before the final exam, consisting of a three-day take-home exam.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The result can be found at the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
