ENG4375 – British and American Modernism
Course description
Course content
This course is an introduction to early 20th century American and British literature loosely described as “modernist.” We will discuss what the term “modernism” means; in what ways modernist literature is related to other forms of artistic production such as film, photography, and painting; what role modernism played in early 20th century American and British culture; and the legacy of modernism in contemporary letters.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- learned to identify several key works of modernist fiction and poetry;
- developed an understanding of the relationship between literature, culture and politics;
- developed your critical reading and writing skills;
- developed your abilities to analyze and engage in scholarly debates about modernist literature.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master program in literature, LAP or other relevant master programs.
Recommended previous knowledge
ENG1303 – British Literature or ENG1304 – American Literature
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap with ENG2335 – British and American Modernism (discontinued)
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
Attendance is an obligatory class requirement (80%).Additional absences must be justified (please contact the exam coordinator).
Each student must hand in an essay of about 5 pages (approximately 11.500 characters) by a certain date, and has to be approved by the teacher for the student to be able to sit for the exam.
Examination
A three-day take-home exam.

English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

Resit an examination
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the next two semesters that the course is taught.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
