ENG4437 – Representations of India in British Fiction

Course content
To analyse novels written by British authors where the main theme is India. Two of these texts were written during colonial times, the rest after India gained independence from the British Empire. The difference between Indian and British culture is an important theme in these works. Although the main emphasis of this course will be on the interpretation of individual texts with regard to themes, structure, imagery etc, it will also be important to analyse how each author deals with the question of cultural identity and the legacy from colonial times
Learning outcome
To gain special insight into the works of some of the most important British writers to have written about India. To develop analytical and critical skills in confrontation with postcolonial texts.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
For studenter utenfor litteraturprogrammet kreves det at man har minst 20 sp engelskspr?klig litteratur, engelsk spr?k eller kulturkunnskap.
Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments and otherwise study on their own. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly
Examination
Students will be expected to give an oral presentation (pass/fail) on a given topic. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. The assessment will be based on an essay of 10 standard pages, which can potentially form the basis for an MA dissertation.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
