ENG4506 – Reading Course in British Studies

Course content

In this course, students will conduct an independent study of a topic within British Studies. The exact question for investigation will be decided by the student and approved by the teacher responsible for the course. A set of relevant reading, amounting to 800-1000 pages must be selected by the student, and this reading may include primary as well as secondary sources. The selected reading cannot, in the main, coincide with the set reading of any other course the students has already completed, but may be used later in the master dissertation.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you:

  • Have gained insight into a topic within British Studies
  • Have demonstrated an ability to phrase a question for investigation
  • Have identified a set of reading, relevant to the question at hand
  • Can critically engage with a topic for investigation
  • Can use selected source-material in support of a line of argument
  • Can give correct references to the source-material used
  • Can write a thematic analysis in appropriate academic English

Admission to the course

This course is a reading course for students in the program English Literature, American and British studies who are planning on writing a Master's thesis in British Studies. It will only be offered when necessary.?Contact the study administration for more information.

Teaching

This is a self-study course with no regular teaching, but some guidance will be given. When you have been accepted to the course, you need to contact the responsible teacher yourself. Together with the teacher, you will decide on a topic within British Studies, and an exact question for investigation. Both will need to be approved by the teacher.

Obligatory activities:

All obligatory activities must be approved for you to sit the exam. All obligatory activities must be approved in the same semester.

Examination

Term paper of 12 standard pages (+/- 10%). One standard page is defined as 2300 characters without spaces.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.

If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
