ENG4910 – Internship for Linguistics and its Application for a Multilingual Society

Course content
The internship will be completed in your second term as a placement in a private or public company, research centre or laboratory where you will be involved in a project or other professional activity with a significant linguistic component.
You will thereby gain work experience and establish contact with professionals in business, language education or research.
Learning outcome
On completing the internship you will have:
- gained insight into the practical applications of linguistics in a professional setting.
- acquired experience in putting your linguistics knowledge into practice.
- reflected on the relationship between the theoretical components of your studies and the practical applications of them.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Teaching
The extent of the internship should be approximately 125 hours (corresponding to 12.5 hours per week over 10 weeks). Working hours may be distributed across the term or concentrated on a shorter period. This will be agreed with your workplace.
You will be supported by the local team of the company/centre and be supervised by an internship supervisor appointed in the company/centre. You will also have a contact person at ILOS.
Following your internship you will write a 10-page report where you describe and evaluate the work of the company or centre, the objectives of the placement and the various projects in which you participated and the knowledge / experience you gained. The report must be written according to academic standards expected at masterlevel.
Examination
The internship will be assessed as passed or failed based on an internship report of about 10 pages (term paper). The report must be written in English.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
