Guest lecture
On March 6th (Monday) 2.15 - 4.00 p.m (14.15-16.00) Vibeke Sperling, senior foreign affairs journalist in Politiken (Copenhagen) and former guest profesor at IKM, will give a guest lecture on "Media and democracy in the former Soviet states, especially the development in Russia, Belo-Russia and Ukrania". She will also comment on the coming elections in Belo-Russia and Ukraina. The lecture is part of the course "Trends in international journalism", but all interested in the topic are welcome.
Seminar groups, Tuesday February 28th
1) Discuss the distinction between 'issue-spesific frames' and 'generic frames' (de Vreese, chapter 2). Try to find examples of such types of framing in news texts in Norwegian media.
2) de Vreese concludes (p. 165) that the 'European' news story essentially is a domestic story. Discuss the factors influencing a 'national framing' of news.
February 27th, Change of subject
The planned lecture about war pictures on February 27th has been cancelled. Instead Kristin Orgeret will talk about 'Media in post-apartheid Africa'.

'Spin' is today a much used concept in discussions about journalism and public relations. Discuss how it is or can be defined. Have you in the international or Norwegian press the last years seen examples of 'news mangement' that you will describe as 'spin'?

Discuss the 'framing conflicts' between different actors concerning the publication of the Mohammad caricaturs.

2) Discuss Al-Jazeeras role in different stages of the last (and continuing) Iraq war. How would you characterize che channels framing of the conflict compared to influential Norwegian media (like the NRK)?

Questions for discussion
1) Go to the BBC news and look at the discussion forum 'Have your say'. How is the discussion forum organized and to what extent can it be said to consitute a kind of transnational or global public sphere for public deliberation?
2) Go to Al Jazeeras English website and look at teir section om global news. To what extent is their global news different from other international news providers (For instance BBC or CNN - if at all?

1) "Independent Journalism" is an ideal for most news organizations. Discuss this standard in relation to the economic relationships of modern media.
2) Try to find examples of 'biased journalism'. How fruitful is the concept?
