MEVIT4336 – European Media orders

Course content
As part of an increasingly global and converging media industry, European media are presently undergoing profound industrial and organisational changes with important political, economic and cultural effects on European societies. At the same time, Europe itself is undergoing changes and crisis, most significantly through the integrational processes within the European Union. The course will adress central issues and problematics in European society from a media research perspective. Central questions will be raised concerning 1) the changing political economies of European Media Orders, 2) The role of the media in European public sphere issues and 3) The role of the media in changing European identities and cultures.
Learning outcome
Students must write a term paper (semester assignment) and present their work in class, to prove they have achieved independent competencies in using theory and analytical methods for evaluating and presenting recent changes in regional, national and local media orders in Europe.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Right to study at the Master?s level.
Recommended previous knowledge
General master level, media theory, European contemporary history, European integration and policy studies, media sociology, media policy studies. Related to MEVIT3220, Media and Globalisation.
Teaching
Lectures will introduce the course literature and the main problematics. Seminars related to the assignments will be obligatory and the students have to do an oral presentation in front of the class at the end of the semester. All discussions in class will be in English.
Examination
A semester assignment and an oral presentation in front of the class. The oral presentation has to be approved before the students can turn in the written assignment. Assignment can be written in Norwegian or English. The written assignment is graded with letters A-F, F is fail.
