MEVIT4730 – Media and Convergence

Course content
Convergence (and divergence) has been a key concept to describe the developments following media digitalization. This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the diverse uses and implications of the concept. Technology, new genres, rhetorical conventions, as well as changing media policies and structures will be presented and discussed.
Learning outcome
The students shall obtain an overview of digital media change, and develop a critical understanding of the various meanings and uses of “convergence/divergence”.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission as MA student.
Recommended previous knowledge
BA in Media studies or BA in Digital media.
Teaching
Teaching will take place throughout the semester. There will be 7*2 hours of lectures and 7*2 hours of seminars. The lectures will cover important issues and theories of the field. The seminars will provide an arena for focussed discussion of these issues and theories, and will also serve as a workshop for writing of term papers.
Examination
Term paper, up to 10 pages. One page is calculated to 2300 characters without spaces. Letter grades A to F where F is fail
Other
Maximum 50 students. The course may be cancelled if less than 10 students apply.
