MEVIT4811 – Quantitative Methodology in media studies

Course content

This course introduces you to foundational knowledge and skills for conducting quantitative research. A central aim of the course is to increase students’ understanding of the choices involved throughout a research process, including assessing what methods and tests are appropriate for different research purposes, and how to analyse empirical data.

The course is organised in six 3-hour workshops combining lectures and student activities, plus an additional day of learning the basics of SPSS.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the scientific process, including choices and assessments in various phases of this process
  • Understand the concepts and techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Understand basic theory of probability
  • Understand the concepts and techniques of quantitative content analysis

Skills

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Use statistical analysis to answer research questions and test hypotheses
  • Assess what methods and statistical tests are appropriate for different purposes
  • Analyse, interpret, and extrapolate from data
  • Use SPSS for analysing data
  • Plan for and conduct quantitative content analyses
  • Present results in academic texts
  • Assess statistical analyses in academic texts and articles

General competence

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Carry out and assess empirical research
  • Critically evaluate the role of quantitative research in media and communication studies

Teaching

Teaching is in the form of combined lectures and workshops.

Students need to install SPSS to their computers before the SPSS course.

2 days take home exam.
