MUS2800 – Sound Theory 1

Course content
This course covers the basics of sound theory, such as sound waves, the auditory system, listening, psychoacoustics, voice, instrument acoustics, and room acoustics. In addition, there is coverage of the fundamental principals of digital signal processing, sound synthesis, and sound manipulation.
Learning outcome
Basic knowledge of sound in music and other areas, together with the possibility of further development within the field of music technology, music psychology, music theory and other areas, as well as linguistics, cognitive psychology, informatics.

Recommended previous knowledge
While meeting the requirements of admission granted to the programme in musicology or to another programme which includes/incorporates the 80-credit group from the programme in musicology, it is desirable that the student has taken mathematics (or its equivalent 2MX) at school.
Teaching
The course is taught during the whole of the autumn semester, with 12 double-hour lectures. Students enrolled on MUS2800 and MUS4800 take teaching jointly. Attendance is obligatory at all times. It is recommended that one takes this course parallel with MUS 2840 and MUS 4840 in sound programming which supplement one another. A portfolio of work needs to be approved by the course tutor prior to the student taking the examination.
Examination
A semester assignment should be delivered within a given deadline at the end of the semester.
