MUS4320 ¨C Music Psychology

Course content

This is an advanced but broadly based course focusing on musical experiences in different contexts, containing elements of music perception, music and emotions, music and motion, as well as music in different social contexts. The course will give the students an overview of relevant research within these fields, and also enable them to plan and carry out a variety of research projects related to the experience of music.

Learning outcome

On successful completion of the course, the students will:

• have an overview of recent research on musical perception
• be familiar with the way in which elements of music theory such as the perception of timbre and pitch, rhythm, texture, tonality, modality, and harmony are based in music psychology
• be familiar with the way in which the interplay between sound, motion and visual perception contributes to musical experiences
• be familiar with the connection between music, motion, and emotion

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Compulsory activities

• Seminar presentation

Information about the assignments and the deadlines will be given during the teaching and in Canvas. You have to hand in the assignments within the deadlines, and you are responsible for familiarising yourself with the requirements for the compulsory activities.

The compulsory activities are only valid within the current semester. All compulsory activities must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Students are responsible to keep track of registered absences and check that everything has been approved.

This is how you apply for a valid absence from compulsory activity/compulsory attendance.

Examination

• Term paper (15 pages, each containing approx. 2,300 characters, spaces not included). Title and topic are to be agreed between each student and the instructor.

You have to fulfill the requirements of the compulsory activities to sit the exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
