Course content
This is an advanced, but broadly based course within the field of sound, sound perception and associated technology designed to enable students to carry out research projects within music analysis, music cognition, music technology, popular music research, music and media, and other fields where knowledge of sound, perception of sound, and available research tools are an essential premise. The course requires previous knowledge corresponding to MUS2801 and MUS2821, and the curriculum will include recent theory, methodology, and technology for research on musical sound.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, the student will:
- be familiar with theories and methodologies within the field of advanced research into musical sound
- have developed practical skills in using recent technology and software for advanced research into musical sound
- be able to work independently on research projects on musical sound within various genres and styles

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master’s degree programme in musicology or other master’s degree programmes at the University of Oslo. The course course requires previous knowledge corresponding to MUS2801 and MUS2821
Teaching
The course consists of 12 double class periods, of which 8 are lectures and 4 are laboratory exercises and project presentations. One obligatory seminar presentation and four lab exercises must be approved by the course instructor in order for a student to sit the exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Term paper (15 pages, each consisting og approx. 2.300 characters, spaces not included), to be handed in by a specified date at the end of the semester. Title and topic are subject to the approval of the course convenor.
