MARLTHESIS – Master Thesis

Course content
The thesis is an independent work, and the topic is of the student's own choice (but must have connection to maritime law). Before starting the actual writing, the student will take part in seminars on thesis writing covering topics such as how to outline the structure, how to best use the library, and how to engage in the writing process. A supervisor will be made available to each student.
The substantive portion of your thesis should be no more than 18,000 words, footnotes included (table of content, acknowledgements, bibliography, tables and registers not included.
Learning outcome
The objective is for a student to engage in research work. The student will learn how to find relevant material, analyze the material and make a systematic presentation, which will be evaluated.
Admission
To be allowed to write the thesis in maritime law - MARLTHESIS, you must be accepted at the Maritime Law (master's 1 1/2-years).

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that you have passed and completed the mandatory courses JUR5401 Maritime Law: Contracts, JUS5402 Maritime Law: Liability & Insurance, MARL5110 Maritime Law: Safety, Competition and EU, MARL5120 Maritime Law in practice: Mock Trial in addition to two elective courses chosen among the listed courses below before you hand in your thesis.

Teaching
The form of teaching is independent work and seminars. Before starting the actual writing, you will take part in seminars which prepares you for the process of thesis writing. The seminars will offer the necessary tools and guidelines for researching and writing a good scholarly thesis based on independent thinking and sound argument. Supervision is mandatory, and the students are given individual supervision of a maximum of 15 hours.
If a student has not found an approved supervisor him/herself, a supervisor will be assigned by the individual who is administratively responsible for master's theses in consultation with the programme director. The individual who is administratively responsible will appoint a supervisor according to the subject of the thesis.

- Remember to register for exam in MARLTHESIS the Studentweb within the deadline: September 1.
- When writing the thesis, you should use the template listed at Juriteket's home-page. There you can find templates for the thesis.

- How to Write and Cite - At the Faculty of Law there is not required that you use one specific citing method, but you are required to use footnotes and not refering to author and page number in brackets directly in the text. If you want to use one specific style; Chicago 16 A is recommended.

Examination
Submission of thesis:
You'll have to hand in your thesis electronically in two different systems; DUO and Inspera. Your thesis has to be uploaded in both systems to complete the formal delivery of your thesis. You thesis will not be sent for examination until it is up-loaded both in DUO and Inspera!
Important!
To complete the submission of your thesis you need to;
1.Submit your master's thesis to DUO open research archive. Log on to Studentweb for submitting your thesis to DUO. Detailed instructions on how to deliver through Studentweb. You need to log-on to Studentweb using your username and password!
2. Send the receipt you receive in your mailbox after you have uploaded your thesis in DUO to your Study Advisor.
3. Submit your thesis in Inspera. Send an e-mail to the student advisor when you have submitted the thesis.
4. You have to upload your thesis as a pdf-file in both in DUO and Inspera.
5. Important! You have to upload the same version of your thesis in both systems. Preferably you should upload your thesis in DUO and Inspera at the same day.
5. It is very important that you ONLY use your candidate number as the name of the pdf-file you upload in DUO and Inspera.
6. If you have an external supervisor, (not a professor or lecturer employed by the Faculty of Law) you'll in addition have to deliver a Supervisor form. It is the student's responsibility to give the form to his/her supervisor to be filled out. The filled in Supervisor form can be scanned and sent by e-mail.
7. If you would like to give your thesis restricted access, read this information carefully.
If you do not meet the deadline, it is important that you give us notice. Postponement of your thesis is given on formal grounds only (medical statement, etc).
Grading
The grading will be finalized about 4 weeks after the handing in of the thesis as long as the thesis is handed in on time.
Language of examination
The Master's thesis should be written in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
- Illness at exams / postponed exams
- Resitting an examination.
- There are special rules for resitting a passed examination in the master's programme in Law.
In most courses, you can take the examination up to three times. For master's degree theses, special regulations apply;
A master's thesis that has received the examination result "Fail" may only be resubmitted once as a new examination attempt, and then by the agreed date and in reworked form.
A master's thesis that has received the examination result "Pass" cannot be resubmitted in reworked form.
Withdrawal from an examination
A master’s thesis that is not passed may be resubmitted only once, and then within the agreed time and in revised form. A master’s thesis that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
