Course content

The course is part of the joint degree North Sea Energy Law Programme, a part-time programme for legal professionals in the energy sector. The programme is offered by the universities of Oslo, Groningen, Copenhagen and Aberdeen.

Learning outcome

A student who has completed this course will have the following learning outcome defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the legal basis and main legal aspects of European offshore petroleum exploration and production

Skills:

  • The competence to acquire, assess and use legally relevant facts and data, law, jurisprudence, research outcomes and literature in the field of offshore petroleum exploration and production

General competence:

  • Competence to participate independently in the debate in the discipline of Energy Law
  • Understanding of  the role of the discipline of Energy Law in society

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Passed Module I of the NSELP: Electricity and Gas: Liberalising and Regulating the Market

Teaching

Seminars and field trip.

Attendance is mandatory.

Examination

Papers and oral presentation.

The NSELP programme is based on a modular system: There are several independent blocks, taught consecutively. Assessments in each block have the same structure and form: papers and oral presentations.
Students write the first paper prior to each block, and the second paper during the two-week teaching period of a block. These two papers will be presented by the students in the class. Students will be required to write a third paper after conclusion of a teaching period.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take this exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

There are special rules for resitting a passed examination in the master's programme in Law.
