FRM1210 – Medical substances and how they work

Course content

This course contains medicinal chemistry, medicinal herbs, cell biology, microbiology, pharmacology and physiology presentent in an integrated manner with focus on drugs and their actions on a molecular/cellular level. The main principles of drug interaction with receptors/enzymes/transporters/channels and intracellular signalling pathways will be covered. Drug synthesis, structure/activity relationships, functional groups, isomerism and drug absorbtion and metabolism will be central chemical issues. The course also includes cytotoxic drugs used in treatment of cancer and infection.

Learning outcome

To give the students sufficient knowledge about medicinal chemistry, cell biology, pharmacology and microbiology to be able to evaluate structure-activity relationsships and molecular mechanisms underlying drug action. They will also be able to perform drug synthesis, isolate and cultivate bacteria and develop test systems for drug action.

Examination

One written exam (4 hours) in the middle of the course and one at the end (4 hours).
