FRM4000 – Pharmaceutical Apprenticeship

Course content
For the most part, the course consists of a six month apprenticeship at a pharmacy where the most important focus is to learn how to deal with medicine related situations in active contact with the pharmacy’s customers and other health personnel. This is accomplished by allowing the student to participate in all of the pharmacy’s tasks, for example filling prescriptions, advising customers in how to use their medicine, the logistics, and the economic/ administrative/ leadership aspects of the job.
Learning outcome
The apprenticeship is to provide the student with training in applying his/her knowledge and to acquire skills that can only be learned in an actual work situation, such that a graduate Master in Pharmacy may contribute to the betterment of health for both the individual and society through the active use of his/her competence within the area of medicines.
Admission
The course is only available to students who have been admitted to the School of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In order to participate in this course, all earlier Pharmacy courses up to and through FRM3030 must be passed and all manditory activities from FRM3040 must be approved.
All students in need (and entitled) of a second exam in FRM3030 are allowed to start on their practice (FRM4000), but failing this exam the practice will not be approved.
In order to sit for the exam: all earlier Pharmacy courses up to and through FRM3030 must be passed.
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
There are compulsory HSE courses at the beginning of the first semester. For students commencing their program from the autumn semester 2015 the following courses are mandatory:
- HMS0501 - Safety and Physical Environment
- HMS0502 - Positive Learning Environment
- HMS0507 - Fire Safety
In addition to this you will have to complete HMS0503 - Laboratory Safety and HMS0506 Patient clinic Safety for participation in Laboratory and clinic-courses in the program.
You will need to provide documentation that you have passed HMS0501, HMS0502 and HMS0507 when you attend the first lecture.
For students who commenced the program from the Autumn semester 2012 up til and including the spring semester 2015 the following courses are mandatory:
- MNHMS0015 - Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) (discontinued) or HMS0501 - Safety and Physical Environment and HMS0502 - Positive Learning Environment and HMS0507 - Fire Safety.
- MNHMS0010LS - Introduction to Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or MNHMS0020LS - In-Depth Laboratory Safety (discontinued) or HMS0503 - Laboratory Safety
- MNHMS0015FS - Introduction to Field Safety (discontinued) or HMS0504 Field Safety.

Teaching
The course starts with five days of compulsory lectures at the School of Pharmacy. During the following 24 weeks the students will have an apprenticeship at a pharmacy; five of these weeks are to be taken as holiday. Directly following the apprenticeship period there will be six days of compulsory lectures at the School of Pharmacy.
Inactivity and / or excessive absences in compulsory education means that the student does not receive final assessment / examination.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The apprenticeship at the pharmacy needs to be passed before the exam can be taken. The following are taken into consideration when evaluating the apprenticeship:
- All compulsory assignments must be turned in and approved within the given deadlines.
- The advisor’s evaluation of the student in accordance with the appropriate evaluation form.
- Attendance. Absence over 10% will normally lead to the apprenticeship not being approved.
The exam consists of two parts: a one hour written exam with multiple choice questions and an oral exam with preparation time. The two parts will take place on separate days. The students must pass both parts in order to pass the course exam as a whole.
During the two exams, the students are allowed to use his/her own notes and any reference material they bring themselves, as well as Internet. Communication between students during the either part of the exam is not allowed.
Examination support material
As of 1 August, 2016, the use of own calculators is no longer permitted. Casio FX-991EX calculators are handed out to all exam candidates at the beginning of the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
