FYS4550 – Experimental high energy physics

Course content

Particle accelerator physics, including beam optics, RF technology and advanced accelerator concepts. Interaction between radiation and matter, modern detectors (ionizing detectors, scintillator systems, semiconductor detectors) and how they are used in experiments. Advanced techniques for data analysis.

Learning outcome

The objective of the course is to give an introduction to experimental techniques and accelerator technology for particle physics. The course includes particle accelerators physics, detectors and statistics/simulations. The course also gives an introduction to the general phenomena which occur when radiation reacts with matter. This will give the students a solid background for research and development projects within accelerator physics and high-energy physics instrumentation.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
