Course content

Equations for atmospheric mass, momentum and energy. Circulation and vorticity. Scale analysis. Elementary boundary layer theory. Quasi-geostrophic theory applied to cyclone wave development. Perturbation method and Rossby waves.

You will become familiar with basic elements of dynamic meteorology

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

Calculus. Some knowledge of basic meteorology and fluid dynamics. GEF2200 – Atmospheric physics (continued), GEF2220 – Weather systems (discontinued), MEK1300 – Introduction to Fluid Mechanics (discontinued)

Teaching

4 hours per week of lectures, seminars and exercises.

Examination

Final oral examination. Assessment of assignments

Home exam around the middle of term. This counts ca 30%, and must be passed. Final oral exam which counts ca 70%. The final grades is given after a total evaluation of the two exams. Letter grades (A-F).

This course does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
