GEO3210 – Introduction to petroleum geology and -geophysics

Course content

The principles of petroleum geology, including the petroleum system comprising hydrocarbon play concept, source rocks, maturation, migration, reservoirs, traps, and seals. Outline of exploration and production techniques in the petroleum industry. The principles related to evaluating potential reservoirs and the environmental and economical impact of the utilisation of the fossil fuels and the possible alternative fuel resources.

Learning outcome

This course aims to build upon some of the fundamental geology developed earlier and apply this knowledge in an understanding of petroleum geology.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Teaching

4 double hours of lectures per week. 2 hours lab per week and 4 days in the field.

Examination

Continuous assessment 30%, final theory examination (either oral or written (3 hours)), which counts 70%. Letter grades (A-F)
