GEO4010 – Introduction to a master study in geosciences

Course content
This course is no longer offered, but it is carried on in 2 parts via GEO4011 – Field Course in Basin Analysis (discontinued) and GEO4012 – Scientific Writing and Presentation from autumn 2008.
GEO4010 presents an introduction in field methods and techniques, laboratory methods and data statistics relevant for a master study in Geosciences i.e. Environmental geology and geohazards, Petroleum geology and geophysics, Physical geography, hydrology and geomatics, and Stratigraphy and paleontology. GEO 4010 is divided into 3 parts:
GEO 4010 is divided into 3 parts:
- Part 1 is a intensive course in basal topics during the first
week of the first semester of the master study. It is common and
obligatory for all study specifications. The basal topics are literature
search, report writing, health and security in the lab and in the field. - Part 2 is introduction and training in actual field techniques
and/or laboratory methods, and/or a field course. - Part 3 is to be done after you have chosen a subject for your
master thesis. It is done in close cooperation with an adviser. It
consists of literature survey or training in a specific method in view
of preparing for your master thesis. You write a report and give a
presentation to your fellow students.
Learning outcome
You will gain knowledge about data acquisition, preparation and analyses and how scientific data is presented in a master thesis. The course presents IT-based methods and technics relevant for the chosen master thesis together with laboratory and field methods. You will also learn about how to write and present a scientific thesis.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
You are accepted for a master study in Geosciences and Natural Resources, disciplines Environmental geology and natural hazards, Petroleum geology and geophysics, Physical geography, hydrology and geomathics or Stratigraphy and paleontology.
Teaching
Lectures and training. Part 1 is an obligatory intensive course in the beginning of the first semester of the master study. Parts 2 and 3 are done in cooperation with an adviser. In disciplines with a short thesis (Environmental geology and natural hazards or Petroleum geology and geophysics), this parts take place in the third semester. In disciplines with a long thesis (Physical geography, hydrology and geomathics or Stratigraphy and paleontology) they start in the first semester.
Examination
Each of the reports from Part 2 and 3 must be approved by the adviser and the person responsible for the course. The student will be granted 10 study point (pass) when each of the 3 parts are fulfilled. Grades: Passed/Not passed.
This course does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
