Course content

The course gives an introduction to human ecology in perspectives from our past. Features from human evolutionary past are presented through comparative studies, particularly by fossil and recent primates. The behavioural approach use modern theory to view different characteristics of humans. It is focused on the understanding of different types of adaptation.

Learning outcome

The students will through lectures and discussions get an overview of human behavioural ecology and evolutionary background, a significant insight for interdiciplinary understanding and development in the science of human ecology.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

• Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

• Physics (1+2)
• Chemistry (1+2)
• Biology (1+2)
• Information technology (1+2)
• Geosciences (1+2)
• Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

Some biological insight is recommended. The course is however of general interest.

Overlapping courses

The course might overlap with older courses. Contact the student administration office if you have questions.

Teaching

The course will be given every spring semester and consist of lectures and seminars.

Examination

Written exam (3 hours).

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the
subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary
examination or fail an ordinary examination. Postponed examination after legitimate absence is also offered.
