BIO3300 – Marine biology

Course content
The course is no longer offered. The course is offered as a Master's course, BIO4300 every autumn semester.
Introducition to methods in marine biology and oceanography relevant to the master study in marine biology.Sampling techniques for pelagic, benthic soft and hard bottom, as well as the litoral zone will be practised together with processing of the data obtained. Physical and chemical properties of the sea will be studied by modern instrumentation. Acoustic and traditional net hault techniques will be merged in plankton studies, and processes as primary production measured by tracer techniques. Work in the laboratory at Blindern and onboard the research vessels Trygve Braarud and Bj?rn F?yn.
Learning outcome
Give the students insight and practical experience in the use of modern methods in marine research, and also achieve knowledge about important groups of organisms in the marine ecosystem.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Teaching
Lectures, cruise- and laboratory work, 2 hours lectures, 4-8 hours cruise/ laboratory work. Max 12 students.
Examination
Mid-term evaluations/ mandatory project work throughout the semester.
