BIO9530 – Regulatory Toxicology

Course content
An introduction to general principles in toxicological risk assessment, both ecotoxicology and human toxicology. The practical use of these principles for protection of the environment and humans will be in focus. The risk assessment principles are well standardised internationally and in the course OECD test protocols and EU's technical guidance system will be elucidated. In the last part of the course the interaction between toxicology and the society will be discussed.

The subject is relevant for persons working or planning to use toxicological risk assessment in their work.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
The courses BIO4530 and BIO9530 have common admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
1. PhD students and master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
2. Other PhD students and visiting PhD students.
3. Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally

Recommended previous knowledge
BIO4500 – General Toxicology (continued) or equivalent knowledge.

Teaching
The course is given as an intensive course in the first part of the spring semester. Many lectures will be given by national experts from research institutes.
An essay has to be written and passed to enter the final exam.
First lecture is mandatory.
This subject uses Fronter.
Examination
The students will be divided into groups wich will prepare and present a lecture in a relevant theme in risk assessment.
An essay has to be passed before you can enter the final exam.
Final written exam (3 hours).

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
