Course content
The course provides a comprehensive survey of all parts of mammalian physiology, using the human body as model. The course includes practical labwork introducing principles of physiological experiments on humans and animal preparations.
Learning outcome
The students will achieve thorough insight into homeostatic mechanisms and the functions of the various organs and organ systems in humans. The students will be able to understand how physiological parameters are measured in humans and animal preparations.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
MBV1020 – Physiology (discontinued).
Following courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV3050:
For students attending MBV3050 autumn 2014 or later, applies that MBV3050 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 is passed.

Teaching
The course format is lectures, 46h, seminars, 18 h, and lab work,15 h. The exact number and dates are subjected to change. The lab work and the seminars are compulsory. Students with a previously approved MBV3050 lab course are exempted from the lab course. Previous participation in seminars gives no exemption. The course material is in English and English seminar and lab groups will be provided when exchange students enroll in the course. Norwegian language will be used for groups with only Norwegian participants.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
Changes may come during the summer.
Several partial oral exams will be held during the whole semester. Student failing two partial exams will fail the course, one failed partial exam is allowed but the result will count towards the final grade average. For partial exams grades 0.-00% will be used and the average will be translated to a final A-F grade. Students withdrawing or not showing up for exams due to documented medical conditions will be allowed to take all remaining exams at the end of the semester at a date to be determined.
The department offer no exam at the beginning of the next semester for this course for students failing the ordinary exam.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
