IN1140 – Introduction to LanguageTechnology

Course content

The course provides an introduction to language technology: methods for automatic analysis of linguistic data. It will further provide an introduction to linguistic theory and relate this to language technology problems. It will be given a first meeting with some language technology tasks such as tokenization, n-gram models, tagging and classification.

Learning outcome

After finishing IN1140, you?ll:

  • be familiar with several language-technological application areas, such as information extraction, machine translation.
  • be able to perform a basic linguistic analysis of linguistic data at several linguistic levels (morphology, syntax, semantics).
  • be able to explain what challenges automatic analysis of natural language gives rise to.
  • have knowledge of key formal models and methods in language technology.
  • be able to write a program that performs some simple language technology tasks, such as tokenisation and frequency analysis.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

4 hours of teachings each week, 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group teachings.

It's highly recommended to attend the first lecture as important information will be given.

Submitting and passing mandatory assignments is required to be allowed to take the exam. Read more about requirements for assignment of assignments, group work and legal cooperation under guidelines for mandatory tasks.

Examination

4 hours written digital exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved to be allowed to take the exam.

It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?INF1820 – Introduksjon til spr?k- og kommunikasjonsteknologi (continued)

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
