IN4180 – Cyber Operations

Course content

Cybercrime, espionage, and network attacks increasingly threaten companies, organizations, and nation-states. Through this course you'll learn the skills necessary to defend networks, detect attacks, and investigate incidents as needed in a security operation center and as part of a governmental investigation. (Defending a network is also called a "blue-team" approach. In the corresponding "red-team" course IN5290 - Ethical hacking you can learn how to test the security of networks.)

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will:

  • have an understanding of cybersecurity and digital forensics concepts
  • have knowledge about security monitoring
  • have knowledge about host- and network-based analysis
  • have knowledge about CTI (Cyber Threat Intelligence)
  • have knowledge about?the technicalities of a forensic process and a digital investigation
  • be able to detect, triage, and respond to security incidents
  • be able to perform tasks as part of cybersecurity operations
  • be able to use relevant tools for detection, response, and investigation
  • be able to identify forensic artifacts on various electronic devices, operating systems, and in transit

Admission to the course

Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme..

Priority is given to students belonging to the Master?Programme?Informatics: Information Security.

General knowledge about computer security and computer networks, e.g. IN2120 – Information Security and IN2140 – Introduction to operating systems and data communication.

Teaching

4 hours of lectures and practice per week.

Examination

The course grade is based on the following assessment items:

  • Home exam: 30% of the final grade
  • Written digital?exam: 70% of the final grade

Both exams must have a passing grade and both must be passed the same semester.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.
