Course content

This course offers a basic introduction to central functions of communication systems. This includes addressing, routing, flow control, error handling, reliability and synchronization. Example for the use of these functions in today’s communication systems are presented, and more specifically how there are used with different network technologies. Important architecture and protocols are covered.

Learning outcome

The goal of this course is for students to:

  • understand basic functions on which modern communication systems are built
  • know how packets find their way through the Internet, and how congestion is avoided
  • know how wireless communication works
  • be able to develop programs that efficiently communicate over a network
  • to improve C programming skills
  • have the required basis for working in this area

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

INF1010 – Object oriented programming (continued), INF1020 – Algorithms and data structures (discontinued) /INF110

Overlapping courses

10 credits with INF4190 – Data communications (discontinued), 9 credits with INF 240, 10 credits with IN 270 and 6 credits with IN-KOM-EVU.

Teaching

2 hours lecture and 2 hours common exercise solving. Additionally will an oracle be available for questions in a terminal room at posted times. Mandatory assignments must be completed during the course. Rules for mandatory assignments.

Examination

Two graded assignments (home exam) that account for approximately 20% each, and a final 4 hours written digital exam that accounts for approximately 60% of the final grade. Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams. All exams must be taken during the same semester. The mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF4190 - Data communications /INF240/IN270.

Other

It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
