INF4580 – Semantic technologies

Course content

"Semantic web" (SW) is a new and exciting development for the future WWW. At the same time, the methods and standards developed for SW are used to exchange and integrate data in industry and the public sector. Semantic technologies give a fascinating combination of web-technology, database technology, modeling, formal logic and artificial intelligence.

Learning outcome

  • Basic standards in semantic technologies (RDF, RDFS, OWL, SPARQL...)
  • Theoretical foundations: semantics in semantic technologies, basic about reasoning
  • Use of libraries for applying technologies in your own programs
  • Ontologies: what they are, how to make them and their uses
  • Survey of existing applications
  • Use of semantic technology for problems in web-development, data integration and data exchange

Admission

10 credits overlap with INF3580 – Semantic Technologies (continued)

Teaching

2 hours of lecture per week, 2 hours of exercises/lab, and compulsory assignments (passed/not passed). The master version of this course has one more assignement than the bachelor version. Rules for mandatory assignmnets.

Examination

4 hour written digital exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.

All written exam resources are allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Other

It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
