INF5072 – Performance in Distributed Systems

Course content

Understanding the limits of system performance and the bottlenecks of distributed systems is challenging and vital to the deployment of any modern high-performance system. The course focuses on techniques you can apply to properly analyse system performance and further locate the bottlenecks in the end-to-end system.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you have:

  • learned about demands and solutions with respect to performance in distributed systems.
  • learned and gained experience in designing and performing experiments.
  • learned about and experimented with algorithms and architectures.
  • gained practical experience in evaluating and improving performance.
  • learned how to present and visualise analysis data to highlight the most relevant results.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

This course has 4 sessions with 6 hours lectures/presentations and 3 sessions with 3 hours lab. Students and teachers will present and discuss the results in plenary sessions.

Examination

3 graded assignments (home exam) with oral presentation that account for 33% each. Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams. All exams must be taken during the same semester.

All written and printed exam resources are allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF5071/9071/5070/9070.
