INF5722 – Experimental Design of IT

Course content

The course teaches participatory experimental design, and continue a tradition at IFI emphasizing user involvement in the design process. The course curriculum is drawing on new techniques from other use-oriented design traditions as well. The purpose of this course is to give the students theoretical and practical knowledge of use-oriented design and the design process. The course includes the use of participatory and experimental techniques from the development of ICT-based services and systems as well as product design . The emphasis is on IT as integral to the use environments and activities. The goal is to design better technologies for the users’ demands and needs-, and provide a better use experience in the activity that the technology will be part of (eg.  -doing taxes, living in a smart house, work).

Learning outcome

After you have completed this course, you

  • possess knowledge to develop a rich understanding of the use context and the user
  • possess knowledge to implement a use-oriented design process where mutual learning is a goal
  • possess skills in various techniques to explore the technical and use-oriented design possibilities
  • possess skills in various techniques for collaborating with users in experimenting with design solutions
  • have gained a basic experience of working in groups
  • can demonstrate a design proposal for the users and discuss it with them
  • can analyze the design and argue for the choice of perspective, materials and form in the solution

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

INF2260 – Interaksjonsdesign (discontinued)/INF4260 – Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (discontinued)/INF4060 – Interaksjonsdesign (discontinued)

We recommend to take this course together with INF5261 – Development of mobile information systems and services (discontinued). We would like to see students with other relevant backgrounds such as the DIG, TOOL and ITSLP programs or design / technology courses from other faculties.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

There will be 2 hours lectures + 2 hours exercises per week. In addition the project will require group work, field studies and experiments in the use context and in the design studio.

Mandatory assignments:

  • a project plan
  • presentation of a paper from the curriculum
  • mid-semester presentation of the project work
  • final presentation of the project work

It is mandatory to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.

Examination

The mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam. The exam evaluation is based on a written report and an oral exam.

  • 50% written report: project report with individual reflections for each group member
  • 50% oral: project presentation and group examination of the curriculum.

The written report needs to be approved before the student can participate in the oral exam. Both parts must be passed in the same semester.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF5721.
