INF-MAT3360 – Partial differential equations

Course content
Partial differential equations, initial and boundary value problems, Representation and analysis of solutions by means of Fourier series, difference methods with stability analysis, maximum principles and energy integrals, Fourier integrals.
Learning outcome
To analyse the most important partial differential equations encountered in applied mathematics and to describe and analyse numerical methods for these equations.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
MAT1100 – Calculus /MAT 100, MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra /MAT 110, MAT1120 – Linear Algebra /MAT 120 and MAT-INF1100 – Modelling and Computations /MAT 100.
Overlapping courses
10 credits with INF-MAT4360 – Partial differential equations (discontinued), 9 credits with MoD226/MA-IN 226/MA-IN 225
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of problem sessions per week. Mandatory assignments must be completed during the course. Rules for mandatory assignments.
Examination
4 hour midterm exam in week 11 (app. 20 %). 4 hour written examination at the end of the semester (app. 80%). The mandatory assignments must be approved prior the exam. General information about the examination.

No examination support material is allowed.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination
This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
The subject is regarded equal to MoD226 when practicing exam regulations.
Other
It is strongly recommended to attend the first lecture since it will be given important information.
