INF5760 – Health Information Systems

Course content

Note: The course will be held with a new version of 10 credits from Spring 2008: INF5761 – Health Management Information Systems (continued)

This course introduces a management information system designed for health-workers at district level. It has been developed by a South-African university in collaboration with the Department of Informatics (Computer Science) here at the University of Oslo. The Course Addresses:

  • The principles of an action-led, district based
    informationsystem
  • Calculation of target populations for a given
    catchmentpopulation
  • Audits of existing information systems at district
    level
  • Development of goals, targets and indicators for
    districtlevel programmes
  • Calculation of different types of indicators using local
    data
  • Presentation of information in the form of tables and
    drawgraphs
  • Analyse indicators for trends over time and compare
    differentfacilities and districts
  • Provision of feedback to data collectors and community
    structures
  • Using the computer to enter data and getting basic
    feedback
  • Current debates on topics of health management

Learning outcome

Participants will learn to use the information system, which is aseparate computer software programme, and will be introduced to current debates in health management.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Lectures given in a two-week period.

Examination

Written essay. Possibly oral exam.

Spring semester 2004, the course was called MED-INF5200.

INF5760 is taught in cooperation with Institutt for allmenn- og samfunnsmedisin (Section for International Health). The course will only be held when resources are available from both departments.
