Course content

The course treats various aspects of the open source philosophy and practice from the start in the software community to new developments where open source forms the basis for huge collaborative projects such as Wikipedia. Special emphasis is put on open source as a tool regarding ICT for development in the South and innovation.

Learning outcome

The students shall attain a thorough understanding of the open source philosophy and its potential and limitations in different settings. They shall be able master common tools and participate in as well as initiate open source projects.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway. However, during the course, special projects may be designed for students with a more advanced background in certain areas.

Teaching

The course has one obligatory (2 hour) lecture at the semester start. Thereafter lectures and seminars take place over two intensive separate periods.

Examination

Mandatory oral presentations, exercises, and written assignments must be passed. A final graded written exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
