TEK5170 – Optimal and predictive control

Course content

The course deals with the formulation of optimal control problems for linear and nonlinear systems, as well as analysis and synthesis of optimal controllers. We will also go through the model-predictive control framework and its applications.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • solve linear quadratic regulator problems
  • formulate dynamical optimization problems subject to constraints
  • use numerical optimization and model predictive toolboxes
  • apply optimal and predictive control techniques to process control and autonomous robots

Overlapping courses

Teaching

Total number of hours: 40 (mostly lectures, with a few possibly devoted to labs). Assignments: 3 compulsory assignments, of which 2 must be approved before the exam, valid for one year after approval. Attendance at the first lecture is encouraged but not mandatory.

Examination

A final, oral exam will count for 100 % of the final grade. In case of many students, a written exam may be held instead.

The course has mandatory assignments that must be approved in order to take the final exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
