Course content

Photonic crystals one, two, and three dimensions

Metamaterials in one, two, and three dimensions

1D: Periodic multilayer films, planar diffraction gratings .

2D: Patterned thin films, optical fibers with holes

3D: Structues with an optical band gap

Bloch-waves in one, two, and three dimensions. Brillouin zones, band diagrams. Numerical methods for Bloch-waves. Evanescent waves, series expansions of electromagnetic fields in Bloch-waves. Photonc crystal defects.

Learning outcome

A fundamental understanding of electromagnetic waves in periodic structures.  An understanding of the application of photonic crystals in optcal micro and nano structures, and in photonics in general.

Admission

Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may apply to take this course as a single course student.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
