UNIK4170 – Digital communications

Course content

The basics of stochastic processes, the architecture of communication systems, baseband representation of modulated signals and noise, modulation techniques, demodulation and detection, bit error rates, Nyquist theorem and inter symbol interference, eye curves, the principles behind equalization, different trade offs between bit error rate, bandwidth, spectral efficiency, modulation, coding and power. The course also covers multiple access techniques in communication nets, link budget and spread spectrum communications.

Learning outcome

The student should grasp the basic theory of digital communications and the most common digital communications techniques. They should obtain good understanding for the fundamental limitations in data rate and transmission quality in different communication systems.

This course, together with other courses within communication studies, should give a solid background for working with modern wireless communications systems at Norwegian telecommunication companies and for further Ph.D. studies.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

The course requires a level corresponding to the basic block of the bachelor program Electronics and computer technology. The course INF3440 – Signal processing is strongly recommended.

Teaching

The course comprises 2 hours of lectures and 1 - 2 hours of exercises per week. The students must hand in and pass one mandatory exercise before they are admitted to take the exam.

Examination

Written exam will be given if the number of candidates is high, otherwise the exam is oral.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
