UNIK4400 – Imaging Radar

Course content

The course gives an introduction to the theory, practice and applications of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and interferometry (IFSAR.) We start with fundamental radar principles. Properties of radar images are next, and then SAR processing and inetreferometric SAR follow. Real world examples and applications from civilian and military systems are given throughout. We cover different SAR modes, such as stripmap, spotlight and inverse SAR. Two real SAR systems are covered in detail. A part covering SAR system and mission design wraps up the course. Although the main emphasis is on radar systems, the course is also relevant for imaging with sonar and ultrasound.

Learning outcome

The students learn how SAR and INSAR systems work, as well as gain insight into the strengths and limitations of such systems. Furthermore, the participants gain experience with signal processing techniques for imaging.

Teaching

Two hours of lectures and one hour of exercises per week.

Examination

A graded (A-F) oral exam is given at the end of the semester.
