UNIK4740 – Information Security in Industrial Sensor and Mobile Systems

Course content

The course focuses on giving you state-of-the-art knowledge about sensor- and mobile systems used in industrial communications (oil and gas, smart grid, automation). It is motivated by real-world challenges from industry, e.g. protection of sensor networks such as smart metering infrastructure against threats and methods for the protection of sensors and devices. The course will also touch on advanced security technologies for mobile communication systems, addressing amongst others security and privacy protection in near-field communications (NFC).

Learning outcome

After completion of the course, you will have achieved the following competence:

  • Understanding of how key information security concepts and principles are addressed in industrial communication networks that include sensors and mobile systems
  • Knowledge of  relevant security standards in industrial networks, as well as mitigation techniques against security threats, intrusion detection and protection mechanisms, and security incidence monitoring and response methodologies
  • Adoption of security standards for selected industrial scenarios
  • Ability to discuss the applicability of security mechanisms in industrial networks, and to explain the security challenges in a system of systems, where various communication technologies such as wirelessHART, Zigbee, Mobile Communication Networks (2G, 3G & 4G), WiMAX, WLAN/WiFi are used to communicate sensors and actuators at field level
  • Analyzing skills in security incidences and possible mitigation techniques based on selected industrial areas such as smart grids, including industrial control systems

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Knowledge corresponding to UNIK3510, UNIK4250 – Security in distributed systems (continued) eller UNIK4190 – Informasjonsteori og feilkontroll (discontinued)

Teaching

3 hours lecture per week. Student presentations and compulsory written assignments which have to be approved before you can enter the final examination.

Examination

Compulsory written assignments have to be approved before you can enter the final examination. Final oral examination (may be written if many students).

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Special examination arrangements

Application form, deadline and requirements for special examination arrangements.
